Dien Bien Phu city is about 500 km from Hanoi. Here are the places not to be missed when coming to Dien Bien Phu on the occasion of the 68th Anniversary of the historic Dien Bien Phu Victory Day (May 7, 2022).
Dien Bien Victory Monument
The project is located on D1 hill, right in the city center. The monument cluster is the tallest, largest and heaviest group of bronze statues in Vietnam ever. The statue has a height of 12.6 m and is cast with 217 tons of bronze.
Hill A1 is located next to Highway 279, Muong Thanh ward. This is the most important stronghold of the French during the Dien Bien Phu campaign, with attractions such as tunnels, tanks, and a “thousand-pound” explosion hole (pictured) created by 960 kg of explosives… Some special experiences are cooking rice for soldiers with the Hoang Cam stove, pushing bicycles carrying necessities, listening to historical stories…
National Martyrs Cemetery A1
The cemetery is located on Vo Nguyen Giap street, a few hundred meters from the historical site of A1 hill. This is the resting place of 644 officers and soldiers who died heroically in the Dien Bien Phu campaign. Most are anonymous graves. The manor house has the typical Thai stilt house architecture in Dien Bien, the outside platform is designed according to Khue Van Cac.
Dien Bien Phu Historical Victory Museum
The museum is located opposite the A1 martyrs cemetery, including the basement and the floating floor designed in the shape of a truncated cone, with decorative details in the shape of a filling symbolizing the camouflage net of the mortar hat. The museum displays hundreds of artifacts about the Dien Bien Phu campaign.
The highlight of the museum is the Panorama painting , one of the world’s largest works on the subject of war, recreating the panorama of the Dien Bien Phu campaign. The painting is 132 m long, more than 9 m high along with the adjacent dome, with a total surface area of about 3,250 m2.
Temple of Martyrs at Dien Bien Phu Battlefield
One of the new destinations of Dien Bien Phu historical tourism is the Temple of the Martyrs at the Battlefield, F hill. This is one of 45 sites of the special National Monument of Dien Bien Phu Battlefield, located next to the A1 hill. From the top of the hill, visitors can see Muong Thanh field, the largest field in the Northwest. The highlight of the main temple is 56 candles representing 56 days and nights of fighting in the campaign. The project was inaugurated this year, on the 68th anniversary of the Dien Bien Phu Victory
Dien Bien Phu campaign headquarters in Muong Phang commune
Located at the foot of Pu Don mountain, the headquarters is nearly 30 km from Dien Bien Phu city. This is where General Vo Nguyen Giap worked and rested during the Dien Bien Phu campaign. From the highest point, visitors can observe the entire Dien Bien Phu city, Muong Thanh valley and French strongholds such as Him Lam hill, Doc Lap Hill, D1 hill, C1 hill, A1 hill… The cluster of Victory Monuments at Muong Phang Park (photo) is also a stop not to be missed when coming here.
