Pulling the Son Tra net

DA NANG – From an overhead perspective, the scene of fishermen pulling their nets in Man Thai appears like a picture of a ‘dance on the sea’.

Da Nang Bay has Son Tra mountain range, shielded and has few big waves, so it is convenient to pull nets to catch fish.

Pulling nets is a daily job of local fishermen, but through a photographic perspective from above, the beauty of the nets becomes works of art.

This work is done in the early morning, if the first catch has fish and shrimp, the fisherman will continue to release the next net.

Each team pulls the net with about 15 people and the net pulling period is nearly 2 hours, including rowing boats and baskets to the sea to release the nets.

The net is more than 1 km from the shore in an arc, on the shore divided into 2 groups to stand on both sides, pull back, and gradually move closer to each other when the net is pulled closer to the shore.

The fishermen, mostly men, stretch their nets with quick hands and feet on the waves that wash ashore.

The picture is when the nets are pulled ashore and ready to dump fish and shrimp into the basket.

On the shore are women ready to carry loads, baskets and baskets ready to hold the pulled fish. They share to bring back or sell to people who go to the beach and exercise in the morning.

The next net caught more fish, which can include fish such as scad, herring, and anchovies. On lucky days right in the channel, fishermen can pull hundreds of kilograms of high-value fish and sell to traders.

The traditional profession of pulling nets of Man Thai fishermen has existed for many generations and is still the main livelihood. Through many ups and downs, this craft village is still preserved by many generations, creating additional income and contributing to preserving the cultural beauty in the lives of people in the coastal areas of Da Nang.
