Little-known things about the largest park in Hanoi are about 60 years old

As a green space air-conditioning for the city, Thong Nhat Park also bears the mark of a historical period of generations living in extremely difficult times of the country.

On May 30, 1961, the park was officially inaugurated. At this time, Vietnam was still divided, the park was named “Thong Nhat” to express the desire to soon liberate the South and reunify the country.

In 1958, Hanoi decided to build an area that used to be a lagoon and a landfill area, four sides of which were ancient villages as a place of entertainment and entertainment for the people of the capital. Scale construction of the largest park in Hanoi at that time with an area of ​​more than 50ha. The park is located between four streets: Tran Nhan Tong, Le Duan, Dai Co Viet, and Nguyen Dinh Chieu, there are many entrances, of which the main gate is on the side of Tran Nhan Tong street.

That day, all strata of the people of the capital participated in the socialist labor movement, voluntarily cleaning garbage, carrying land, dredging lakes, building mounds, planting trees … to create a beautiful landscape for the city. .

Thong Nhat Park has tens of thousands of trees of all kinds of flowers and leaves in four blooming seasons, with smooth willow lobes, green pine trees and many kinds of fruit trees.

The park has an amusement park for adults, a refreshment house called Quan Gio, and an outdoor stage; children’s play area with electric ferris wheel, iron frame airplane, train, magnificent horse … and attractive deformed mirror house. The mirror house at that time was called the Laugh House, which made 5x, 6x, 7x generations fascinated.

The park encompasses Bay Mau lake 25ha wide. There are two small islands in the lake bed, Hoa Binh Island and Thong Nhat Island. Hoa Binh Island is a quiet place, suitable for the elderly to exercise and relax. On the island there are a few tall, large, wide canopy trees. This season, white flowers bloom all over the corner.

Entering the park from the gate on the side of Le Duan street (the former Southern road) through a curved bridge is to reach Thong Nhat Island. The island has an area of ​​over 6,000m2, surrounded by many kinds of green trees and grass, fresh in four seasons. The bridge to the island is also called Thong Nhat Bridge. 

On the island there are statues of Uncle Ho and Uncle Ton – meaningful gifts from the Party Committee, authorities and people of Ho Chi Minh City to the people of the capital on the occasion of the 1000 year anniversary of Thang Long – Hanoi, 2010 . 

Thong Nhat Park is not only a “green lung”, an interesting and ideal destination for people in the capital and visitors, but it also contains a great symbolic meaning of a historical period. clan. In the photo is the track that surrounds the park for children to visit with cheap fares, this is the only train track available in the park.

The 1960s, 1970s, 1980s… the park was a quiet and favorite place for students and students to take exams. The bridge and coconut trees on the Thong Nhat bridge have taken a souvenir photo of many generations of Hanoi’s youth before leaving for the South to fight.

Especially not to mention the Uncle Ho banyan tree located next to the coconut peninsula. Looking from outside Dai Co Viet Street, we saw the shadow over a corner of the park, paved with bricks along the way and built a high round rocky bank around the tree trunk.

Banyan tree planted by Uncle Ho himself in the year of Canh Ty 1960 on the occasion of the launching of Tet tree planting for the first time. Since then, the New Year tree planting has become a fine tradition of the people of Hanoi and the whole country during the spring holidays. 

Possessing an immense space that is not obscured by tall buildings, this place has long been a relaxing space for people. In the morning, you will feel the freshness of morning mist and the pristine things of nature before returning to the noisy and rushing life outside.

This is a beautiful space of the city converging many factors such as: trees, large area, lake … and memories of previous systems, very suitable for relaxation.

In 1980, the park was renamed, Le Nin Park. In 2003, when Chi Lang Flower Garden at Dien Bien Phu – Hoang Dieu intersection was named after the leader of Russia (former the Soviet Union), the original name of Thong Nhat Park was renamed and kept up to now. Follow Dan trí
