Flower market in the old town shows buffalo for Tet

HANOI – The streets of Hang Ma, Hang Luoc, Hang Roi … are flooded with Tet decorations such as 10 million dong sponge buffalo, Banh Chung, Banh Tet and red lantern.

Before the New Year’s Eve 2021, the flower market of the old town sold many buffalo-shaped decorations. Prominent on Hang Ma street is a golden buffalo in front of a shop specializing in fake flowers and foam decorations.

The buffalo is made entirely of foam, covered with yellow paint paper with the size of 3/4 real buffalo. The owner said that he intended to be a buffalo to display for the shop, but would offer 10 million VND if someone asked to buy.

Table buffalo made of hard pressed foam (fomex cover), with funny shapes, is also a new decoration item this year. In the Tet market on Hang Ma street, there are only a few goods selling this product, with prices ranging from 100,000 to 500,000 VND per animal.

Two child tourists were taken by their mothers to the old town to take pictures and buy Tet decorations. Ms. Thanh Yen (Ho Chi Minh City), the mother of two children, said: “The red street is very beautiful. The goods here are also very diverse, many new products and lovely shapes”.

On the afternoon of January 29, it was sunny, many people and tourists came to shop and take pictures. Huong Giang (Ha Nam) said that this was the first time she came to Tet market in the old town, the streets were flooded with beautiful red colors. In addition to shopping for peach branch decorations, she also took photos of Tet here, then played at the walking street on weekends.

To celebrate the New Year, the shops are flooded with decorative patterns for doors, hanging trees and lucky lucky money in the form of buffalo.

Handcrafted flower vines and door-hanging discs are priced from 400,000 to 700,000 VND.

Many shops sell handmade products. Guests can also order according to own models.

Traditional Tet-style decorations such as watermelon, banh chung, banh tet … are offered for sale, ranging from VND 60,000.

The fake flower shops on Hang Roi street attract visitors.

This year, there are several shops selling Japanese kumquats, also known as Japanese chili. This plant is easy to grow and care for, and the fruit has many colors. A tree sells for 200,000 – 350,000 VND depending on the shape of the pot.

The whole street is flooded with red, bustling shoppers in the days before Tet. The shop owners and visitors here mostly wear masks to prevent epidemics. Visitors who want to take photos at the stalls should get permission in advance from the sellers. Note that it is not advisable to stand in front of the door to take pictures without making a purchase in the morning, because many people think this is unlucky in business.

This year’s Tet flower market is held in the streets: Hang Luoc, Hang Khoai, Hang Roi, Hang Ma and Phung Hung mural street. In addition to decorative goods or silk flowers, the market also sells peach blossoms, kumquats, some fresh flowers in the area of Phung Hung Street.

New Year’s Flower Market, also known as Hang Luoc flower market, is a long-standing feature of the capital’s people. The market is held once a year, from December 15 to 30, with the highest volume after December 23.
