Hanoi (VNA) - The Vietnam Open Technology Forum 2020 (Open Summit 2020) was held on Wednesday, November 18 in Hanoi.

With the theme “Promoting digital transformation The event brought together more than 200 representatives of units specializing in information technology from ministries, sectors and municipal information and communication service, as well as technology experts and representatives of technology companies.

The concept of open-source software dates back to 1983. After more than 30 years, open source software is ubiquitous, found in almost all commercial applications. Large software companies around the world (Google, Facebook,…) are involved in the development and contribution to open source software projects. In Vietnam in the late 90s of the 20th century, groups of open source software developers began to appear in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City.

According to Information and Communication Minister Nguyen Manh Hung, information technology and digital technology exist in every nook and cranny of everyday life. That is why it is necessary to reduce the cost of information technology.

According to him, in the future, most values will be generated from data. Therefore, open data and open data is a prerequisite for creating new value for the people and the country. The Ministry of Information and Communication has put into operation the National Archives Portal at which so far has more than 10000 sets of archives.

Regarding the fifth generation of standards for mobile telephony (5G), Vietnam is the 5th country in the world to have 5G equipment. Two large technology companies in the country, Viettel and Vingroup, after a period of independent development of the technology 5G , under the leadership of the Ministry of Information and Communications, have agreed to cooperate to develop 5G enabled by “open-RAN” technology, said Nguyen Manh Hung.

There are three advantages to using open source software in business development: saving resources in software development; improve the quality of products and services; reduce the costs of products and services. Vietnam must focus on strengthening human resources and creating markets to benefit from open source software applications and development.

According to Nguyen Trong Duong, deputy director of the IT department under the Ministry of Information and Communication, Vietnam should have policies to promote the learning, application, research and development of free software and encourage businesses to invest in the development of open source software.
