Hanoi (VNA) - Repair operations on the Asia-America Gateway (AAG) submarine cable are expected to continue until June 6 according to a representative of a Vietnamese internet service provider.

The repairs, which began on May 28 and scheduled to be completed by 9 a.m. on June 2 suffered a setback when a new rupture was discovered on the cable connecting Southeast Asia to the United States.

The cable broke on May 14 on the S1H section connecting Vietnam to Hong Kong, China, causing disruption to international Internet services across Vietnam. This section experienced a traffic disruption on April 2 before being operational again on April 21.

The 20191 cable has experienced numerous breaks and breakdowns since its entry into service at the end of 2009 mostly located in the intra-Asian segments between Hong Kong and Singapore.

To make matters worse, the Asia-Pacific Gateway (AAG) submarine cable broke on May 23 on segment S1.7 after a possible incident on segment S9. Repair work is not yet announced.

Officially commissioned in December 2016 this system links mainland China, Hong Kong (China), Japan, the Republic of Korea, Malaysia, Taiwan (China), Thailand, Vietnam and Singapore over approximately 10400 km. - VNA
