Great Britain have secured their first ever Paralympic medal in wheelchair rugby after beating the United States 54-49 at Yoyogi National Stadium on August 29.

It was the first time a European nation had even made the gold medal match with only Australia, United States, Canada and New Zealand having done so before.

For Great Britain, while they had made bronze medal matches at Atlanta 1996, Athens 2004 and Beijing 2008, they had never won a medal, finishing fourth on all four occasions.

Judo

Brazilian judoka star Alana Maldonado can now add a gold medal in her trophy cabinet. After winning silver in her home Games at Rio 2016, Maldonado brought her prowess back in the mat at Tokyo 2020 during the gold medal match against Georgia's Ina Kaldani in the women's -70kg - B2 class finishing off with a waza-ari. This is Maldonado's second Paralympic Games.

Swimming

USA’s Mckenzie Coan blasted through the women's 400m freestyle S7 and touched the wall first at 5:05.84 followed by Giulia Terzi of Italy and Julia Gafney of USA.
