Paralympics: Wheelchair racer Tomoki Sato wins Japans first gold medal in athletics

Five-time world champion Tomoki Sato carried the hopes of the host nation on the first day of athletics and he didn’t disappoint, winning Japan’s first gold medal in athletics in the men’s 400m T52 at the Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Games.


The wheelchair racer stormed to victory in 55.39 to set a Paralympic record at the Olympic Stadium. This is Sato's first Paralympic gold medal of his career. Five years ago, Sato claimed two silver medals at Rio.

Following Sato today is USA's Raymond Martin who finished in a new season best time of 55.59 to claim silver. Sato's teammate Hirokazu Ueyonabaru took bronze.

Brazilians Petrucio Ferreira dos Santos wins the men's 100m T47 final

Reigning champion Petrucio Ferreira dos Santos defended his Rio title today when he claimed gold in the men's 100m T47 after setting the track ablaze with a time of 10.53, a Paralympic record. Poland's Michal Derus follows with a silver with 10.61, but Ferreira dos Santos' teammate managed to scoop bronze at 10.68

In the men's 100m T37, Nick Mayhugh scooped gold whilst China’s Wen Xiaoyan claimed gold with a world-record breaking run of 26.38 in the women's 200m T37, followed by her teammate Jiang Fenfen with a new Paralympic record of 27.33.

USA's Roxanne Trunnell claims gold in equestrian - Grade I

Roxanne Trunnell conquered Day 2 of equestrian events by claiming gold in Dressage Individual Test - Grade I after scoring a total of 81.464 with her horse Dolton and beating Latvia's Rihards Snikus and Italy's Sara Morganti.

The US athlete who also scored a new world record earlier this year is also the world no. 1 in five Para equestrian grades.

China top team gold medal match in women's epee wheelchair fencing, RPC win in men's

China won in the women's team epee events at the Makuhari Messe Hall in Tokyo, whilst the men's team took silver with RPC taking home the gold after scoring 45-39

Gold rush for Azerbaijan on Day 1 of judo competition at Tokyo 2020

Azerbaijan had a sensational start to the judo competition by winning the first two gold medals on Day 1 at the Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Games.

Shahana Hajiyeva was the first to the podium after a dramatic victory over French legend Sandrine Martinet in the women's -48kg B2.

Azerbaijan’s Vugar Shirinli collected the country's second gold in the men's -60kg when he overpowered Kazakhstan’s Annuar Sariyev with an Ippon in 3:40. It had been an evenly matched bout, before Shirinli, a bronze medallist in the World Championships, landed the killer blow.

On the way to the final, he had overpowered two-time European champion Alex Bologna from Romania and Turkey’s Recep Ciftci. In the first of the bronze medal bouts, Bologna beat Uzbekistan’s Namozov Sherzod and Ciftci beat Venezuela’s Marcos Dennis Blanco.
