Olympics: Alexander Zverev wins gold in men's singles tennis

German tennis star Alexander Zverev was crowned the men’s singles Olympic champion after comfortably defeating Karen Khachanov of Team ROC 6-3 6-1 in the title match at Ariake Tennis Park in Tokyo, Japan on August 1.


The 24-year-old had already stunned world No. 1 Novak Djokovic of Serbia who was aiming for a Golden Slam – all four singles Grand Slams, plus the Olympic Games, in one year – in the semifinal, winning 1-6 6-3 6-1.

The Czech Republic’s Barbora Krejcikova and Katerina Siniakova overpowered Belinda Bencic and Viktorija Golubic of Team Switzerland 7-5, 6-1 in the final of the women’s tennis doubles at Ariake Tennis Centre on August 1.

The Czech victory upset Bencic’s hopes of winning both a singles and doubles gold medal at Tokyo 2020. Had she won the doubles match she would have become only the fifth member of an elite group of tennis players to win a singles and a doubles gold medal at one Olympic Games since the sport returned in 1988.

Brazil’s Rebeca Andrade soared to the women's vault gold medal in the first day of apparatus finals for artistic gymnastics at Tokyo 2020 on August 1.

Andrade's 15.083 held off Team USA’s MyKayla Skinner, who averaged 14.916. Republic of Korea’s YEO Seojeong was the bronze medallist at 14.733.

Max Whitlock defends Rio gold medal in the men's pommel horse

Team GB's Max Whitlock retained his Olympic title on the pommel horse Sunday (August 1), besting rival Lee Chih-kai of Taiwan (China), 15.583 to 15.400.

Whitlock is the first man in 41 years to repeat as Olympic champion on the event, after Zoltan Magyar won in 1976 and 1980. Japan's Kaya Kazuma was the bronze medallist, scoring 14.900.

Denmark's Anne-Marie Rindom cruised to Olympic gold in the women's one person dinghy laser radial event at Enoshima Yacht Harbour on August 1.

Despite finishing at seventh in the medal race, the Danish had sailed away with 78 net points in total to clinch gold in her second Olympic Games. This is the first Olympic gold medal for Rindom who already has a bronze from Rio 2016 in the same event.

Sweden's Josefin Olsson who crossed the finish line first took silver at 81 points whilst the Netherlands Marit Bouwmeester managed to climbed back to third place and win bronze. Marit now has three Olympic medals in her trophy cabinet - with a silver at London 2012 and gold at Rio 2016.

Matt Wearn wins gold in men's one person dinghy laser for Australia

Matt Wearn took gold in the men’s one person laser event at the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020 on August 1. The Australian sailor finished in second place in the medal race, scoring four points, which were enough for him to take the title.

The medal race at Enoshima Yacht Harbour was won by Jean Baptiste Bernaz of France, but his total score of 92 meant that he finished in sixth place overall.

Wearn scored a total of 53 points overall, while Croatia’s Tonci Stipanovic, who finished fourth in the medal race, scoring eight points, took take the silver medal with 82 points. Hermann Tomasgaard scored 85 to clinch the bronze, giving Norway its first medal in sailing since 2004.
