Olympics: Tatjana Schoenmaker storms to record-breaking victory in women's 200m breaststroke

Tatjana Schoenmaker of Team South Africa erupted in tears when she won the women's 200m breaststroke with a stunning world record time of 2:18.95 on July 30.


This was the first Olympic gold medal for South Africa at Tokyo 2020.

Meanwhile, it was a double medal for Team USA as Lilly King and Annie Lazor took silver and bronze.

On July 30, Canada won Olympic gold in the women's eight rowing final, the first time a team that is not the USA or Romania have won the title since 1992.

The Canadian team, made up of Lisa Roman, Kasia Gruchalla-Wesierski, Christine Roper, Andrea Proske, Susanne Grainger, Madison Mailey, Sydney Payne, Avalon Wasteneys and Kristen Kit, went out fast from the beginning, building an unassailable lead that no other team could live with.

And while New Zealand could not match Canada's pace, they fought valiantly to finish second and claim the silver medal. The Chinese crew finished an impressive third to win bronze.

The final time for Canada at the Sea Forest Waterway was 5:59.13, a mere 0.91 ahead of second-place New Zealand. China were a further second back, ending the race in 6:01.21.

New Zealand win men's eight rowing title

Team New Zealand’s Rowers Thomas Mackintosh, Hamish Bond, Tom Murray, Michael Brake, Daniel Williamson, Phillip Wilson, Shaun Kirkham, Matt Macdonald and Sam Bosworth claimed the Olympic men's eight title in 5:24.64 at Tokyo 2020 on July 30.

Germany secured the silver in 5:25.60, edging bronze medallists Great Britain by 0.13 seconds with a late sprint for the line.

In a thrilling men's BMX racing final at Ariake Urban Sports Park, Netherlands' Niek Kimmann stormed to victory in a time of 39.053. The Dutch rider held off the challenge of Great Britain's Kye Whyte, who won silver, with Carlos Ramirez Yepes of Colombia finishing third.

One of the most remarkable aspects of Klimmann's victory is the fact that he competed in the final with a fractured knee, after crashing into a steward during a training run. However, he recovered from the accident in time to win the final - and with it the Olympic gold medal.

Great Britain’s Bethany Shriever led from the start before winning a thrilling women’s BMX racing final in a time of 44.358 on July 30, just 0.09 seconds ahead of two-time Olympic champion, Mariana Pajon (Colombia).

The Netherlands’ Merel Smulders took the bronze.
