Vietnamese representatives get comfortable AFC Cup 2021 draws

Forward Nguyen Van Quyet (L) and Hanoi FC once advance to the AFC Cup semifinals in 2019.

NDO – Two representatives of Vietnam, Hanoi FC and Saigon FC, have been placed in comfortable groups in the 2021 AFC Cup draw, made at the AFC headquarters in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia on January 27.

Specifically, Hanoi FC, 2020 National Cup winners and V.League 1 runners-up, join Indonesia’s champions Bali Utd, Cambodia’s champions Boeung Ket and the winner of the first playoff of the ASEAN Zone in Group G.

Meanwhile, V.League 1’s third-place team Saigon FC were drawn in Group H along with Malaysia’s runners-up Kedah Darul Aman, Singapore’s third-place side Lion City Sailors and the winner of the second ASEAN Zone playoff.

With the 2020 edition cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Lebanon’s Al Ahed FC, the 2019 champions, will kick off the defence of their title in Group A of the West Zone with Bahrain’s Al Hidd, Syria’s Al Wahda and Al Nasr of Oman for company.

The group stage matches will be played in centralised venues beginning May 14, with the ASEAN Zone campaign slated for June 22-28.

The 2021 AFC Champions League draw also took place on the same day, with reigning V.League 1 champions Viettel FC drawn in Group F, which also sees the presence of title holders Ulsan Hyundai (Republic of Korea), BG Pathum United (Thailand) and a playoff winner.
