Da Nang People’s Committee said the order is effective until further notice.
It bans any gathering of over 30 people and urge people to keep a minimum distance of one meter in work places, schools and hospitals.
Festive activities, religious ceremonies, sports tournaments and crowded events in public places, stadiums and big venues are prohibited. Da Nang also temporarily suspend operations of “non-essential” services like amusement parks, beauty facilities, karaoke and massage parlors and bars.
The city also rolls out other protective measures, including reducing numbers of students in the classrooms and encouraging people to wear face masks.
The move comes after Da Nang recorded two community transmission cases in the past few days, ending Vietnam’s 99-day streak of no community transmission.
“Patient 416” is a 57-year-old man in Da Nang who has tested positive with the novel coronavirus five times as of Saturday morning. He remains in critical condition and faces high death risk. He is on ventilators and connected with extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) machine, which involves pumping blood out of the body and to a heart-lung machine that removes carbon dioxide and sends oxygen-filled blood back.
“Patient 418” is a 61-year-old man who also in severe condition and needs ventilation support. He is being treated in the central city’s Da Nang General Hospital.
Authorities have yet to confirm the source of transmission for the cases.
Truong Huu Khanh, head of the infection and internal neurology department at the Children’s Hospital No.1 in Ho Chi Minh City, said the second wave of Covid-19 infections could break out in the country if people neglect and do not take preventive measures.
Khanh predicted the outbreak could potentially hit its peak in September since students will begin a new school year and people return to work after summer break.
Vietnam has recorded 418 novel coronavirus cases as of Sunday morning, of these 365 have recovered. Of the 53 active cases, six people have tested negative for the first time and two have done so for the second time.
