Fishing ships sailing out to the sea for billions in profit

Since the beginning of the year, many distant fishing ships in Bao Ninh commune, Dong Hoi city, Quang Binh province have made profitable fishing trips at sea. Many of which have produced hundreds of tons of fish and have subsequently made billions of dong in profits.

At the beginning of August, after a 20-day sea trip, the fishing ship registered under QB 91999 TS belonging to fisherman Pham Tuyen (Bao Ninh commune) docked with a storage full of 250 tons of mackerel scad. After docking at Nhat Le fishing port, the fishing ship's crew members quickly transported the fish ashore where traders were waiting to buy fish. At the fishing port, traders bought the mackerel scad at a price of 10,000 VND/kg, and Mr. Tuyen earned nearly 2.4 billion VND in profit. After balancing and deducting expenses, Mr. Tuyen's fishing trip at sea made a profit of nearly 1.8 billion dong.

Mr. Pham Tuyen attributed the success of his sea fishing trip to mainly favorable weather. The fishermen on the ship used modern means of fish detection in the distant sea fishing grounds, so they found a large stream of scads. “This has been the most successful fishing trip ever since I started sailing. The fishing ship found schools of round scads, slender mackerel scad, mackarel scads, etc. Now that the oil price has dropped and the catch is high, fishermen are encouraged to sailing farther out to the sea", Mr. Tuyen added.

Bao Ninh commune currently houses an offshore fishing fleet (ships with a length of 15m or more) consisting of 190 ships. Many fishing ships in the commune have been highly effective at fishing in the far seas since the beginning of the year, earning over billions of dong for each trip to the sea. For example, the ship registered under QB91667 TS belonging to Mr. Nguyen Cong Hoan, QB 91727 TS belonging to Mr. Dinh Thuy, QB 91225 TS belonging to Mr. Mai Dung, QB 01126 belonging to Mr. Nguyen The Giang, QB 91868 belonging to Mr. Nguyen Thiet Ke, QB 91478 belonging to Mr. Nguyen Tien Quyet among many others have completed multiple successful trips to the sea and made billions in profit.

According to Mr. Nguyen Thanh Binh, Chairman of Bao Ninh Commune Farmers' Association, the total fishing output of the commune has reached over 7,000 tons so far (out of 11,000 tons as detailed in the annual plan). “After 2 years of the Covid-19 pandemic severely affecting production, marine exploitation has made a lot of progress in 2022. Many fishing ships and fishermen have purchased fishing nets, tools and modern means for detecting and catching fish, so the efficiency is gradually increasing. Some fishing ships have switched from old light bulbs to LED lights in order to gain more efficiency in marine exploitation", shared Mr. Binh.

At Nhat Le fishing port, Mr. Nguyen Cong Hoan's the fishing ship was registered under QB 01667 in the morning after a 20-day voyage to practice seine nets. Mr. Hoan's trip to the sea was also a successful one, the ship made a profit of nearly 1.5 billion dong. Mr. Nguyen Thanh Huy, a fisherman on this fishing ship, shared his story while helping a friend repair some of the lights on the boat's light rig: "Our ship has moved from the traditional lighting system to modern LED lights and the fishing efficiency has improved greatly. The initial investment for the LED rig is around 750 million VND, and we quickly made up for this investment sum.”

According to Mr. Huy, if fishing ships install LED rigs, they will have lower capacity but the lights are brighter compared to traditional light rigs. “As a result, the ship engine can reduce fuel consumption during operation by 50% compared to normal levels. Each trip to sea also costs less in terms of oil price, by more than one hundred million dong" Mr. Huy added. Mr. Nguyen Cong Hoan has a fleet of offshore fishing ships that are equipped with the LED rig. Each of the ship has made many trips to the sea since the beginning of the year and generated billions of dong in income.

According to Mr. Le Ngoc Linh, Director of Quang Binh Sub-Department of Fisheries, the province currently has nearly 20 ships which have changed from their traditional light rigs to LED lights. “The effect of fishing ships using LED rigs has been clearly demonstrated. We are also calling for projects to support fishermen and switch light rigs in order to save production costs, improve fishing efficiency, increase income for fishermen and motivate fishermen to stick to the sea, to the fishing grounds", said Mr. Linh.
