NDO - The northern province of Dien Bien has commenced a project to manage multiple disasters in the Nam Rom River Basin with a total capital of over 981 billion VND (43,000 USD).
Funding for the project includes 665.5 billion VND from official development assistance, 275 billion VND from counterpart funding and 40.5 billion VND from the EU’s non-refundable assistance.
Under the project, Dien Bien will build 14.7 kilometres of embankment along Nam Rom River, construct spillways, and dredge several sections of the river.
The project will also include building a monitoring system, enhancing multiple disasters management capacity and communication activities.
According to Dien Bien Vice Chairman Pham Duc Toan, Nam Rom River has been associated with the history of Dien Bien, which has supported the lives and production of local residents.
However, in recent years, the river has faced the serious impacts of disasters such as floods and drought due to climate change.
Therefore the project is highly significant to reducing the losses caused by water disasters, protecting the safety of the 40,000 local residents and increasing the flood drainage capacity in the 150 square kilometres of the Dien Bien Basin.
The project will also help enhance water supply for agricultural production, people’s lives and manufacturing facilities.
