Note about shrimp farming season

To complete the set plan, reduce damage caused by natural disasters, diseases, and climate change until the 2022 shrimp crop, Khanh Hoa province has issued instructions on stocking time.

Mrs. Nguyen Thi Toan Thu, in charge of the Aquaculture Department (Khanh Hoa Fisheries Sub-Department), said that the time to start stocking black tiger shrimp is from March to August 2022. For intensive and semi-intensive farming, shrimp should be stocked from 15 to 25 heads/m2, and for extensive farming, shrimp should be stocked below 15 heads/m2. However, in farming areas with good infrastructure and water sources, the stock can be stocked until the end of September 2022.

In addition, for areas where farming is not semi-intensive and intensive, farmers should combine biodiversity such as black tiger shrimp with cobia, bamboo shoots, mullet, tilapia, sea cucumbers.

For white-leg shrimp farming, the stocking time starts from February to September. However, the farming area is less affected by floods, infrastructure conditions, and guaranteed water sources; farmers can stock until December.

Note that intensive and semi-intensive farming methods should be applied to tarpaulin-lined ponds (high-density stocking of over 100 heads/m2); or an earthen pond with investment in modern facilities, equipment, and new and advanced farming technology; build a separate system of water supply and drainage ditches, with ponds to treat wastewater and sludge before being released to the environment.

As for the extensive farming method, improved extensive farming should be applied to earthen ponds; with little investment in facilities and equipment, people can combine biodiversities such as white-leg shrimp with tilapia in sedimentation pond, shrimp and crab...

For the intensive and semi-intensive black tiger shrimp farming model, only one crop per year should be raised; intensive and semi-intensive white-leg shrimp farming and improved extensive shrimp farming, specializing in shrimp farming two crops/year.

Besides, there should be a break between crops of 1 month for effective ponds and two months for ponds damaged by disease or stocking other species such as seabass, fish grouper, monogamous tilapia, seaweed, sea cucumber... to kill pathogens, increase income, and improve the environment.

Application of high technology in shrimp farming

Khanh Hoa Department of Agriculture and Rural Development recommends that before stocking shrimp for 5-10 days, shrimp farmers need to monitor weather changes. If the weather is not favorable for shrimp farming, suspending stocking or consulting the local aquaculture management agency is advisable.

Farming households in the same area with the same water supply and drainage system should organize dredging of canals to increase water supply and drainage capacity in their farming areas and simultaneously stock shrimp in concentrated shrimp farming areas.

Farmers should nurse for 2-3 stages and use large-sized fingerlings for commercial shrimp stocking. Along with that, apply effective farming models such as the Biotechnology application model, Biofloc, recirculation, little water change... Also, shrimp farmers should continue to implement the process of water shrimp farming with chemical restrictions.

In Ninh Phu commune, Ninh Hoa town promotes white-leg shrimp farming applying advanced farming technology Semi Biofloc, Mr. Pham Thanh Sinh, Chairman of Ninh Phu Commune People's Committee, said: The whole commune has 110 hectares of white-leg shrimp farming. 17 hectares of shrimp farming by Semi Biofloc technology has brought high economic efficiency. Accordingly, the success rate of shrimp farming is 80-90%, the average farming area of 2,000m2 is 5 tonnes, 3-4 times higher than that of farming in earthen ponds.

In addition, the farming model can control diseases and ensure food safety. In particular, raising shrimp with wastewater into the environment is methodically handled by farming households. Specifically, the wastewater is initially discharged into the reservoir, then limed for treatment, then released into the pond to release fish before releasing it directly into the environment. Professional authorities highly appreciate this issue.

"With the efficiency of shrimp farming by Semi Biofloc technology, farmers in the area are continuing to expand the model," said Mr. Pham Thanh Sinh.

According to Khanh Hoa Fisheries Sub-Department, in 2021, the total area of brackish water shrimp farming in the province was about 1,700 hectares. Of which, 1,421 hectares were stocked with white-leg shrimp, and 288 hectares were stocked with black tiger shrimp, with a total output of 4,126 tonnes.

Although the brackish water shrimp farming area decreased by more than 314 hectares, the 2021 output increased by 135.6 tonnes compared to 2020. The decrease in the farming area was the Covid-19 epidemic, which caused difficulties in shrimp production and consumption. Therefore, farmers limit the stocking of new breeds and raise shrimp to large sizes, leading to a low stocking area.
