Daily infections surge by 12,103 as over 350 fatalities recorded

The nation’s Covid-19 infection tally rose to 422,469 following an additional 12,103 positive Covid-19 cases detected, with Ho Chi Minh City and its neighbor Binh Duong reporting the highest number of infections with 9,530, said the Ministry of Health on August 28.

The five localities recording a high number of cases behind Ho Chi Minh City and Binh Duong include Dong Nai (797), Long An (451), Tien Giang (241), Dong Thap (143), and Da Nang (109). The remaining new patients were recorded across 33 other localities.

Of the latest cases recorded nationwide on August 28, a total of 6,468 were found within the community, with the rest being in quarantine zones and areas under lockdown.

WHO presents medical supplies to support Vietnam’s Covid-19 fight

The World Health Organization (WHO) has handed over medical supplies and consumables to the Ministry of Health as part of its continuing support to the Vietnamese Government for Covid-19 response. In this batch of donations, WHO presented US$ 413,451 worth of medical supplies, including 36,000 surgical masks, 70,000 respirator masks, and 50 sets of High Flow Nasal Cannula systems to Vietnam. More supplies are expected to arrive in the coming days.

At the handover ceremony, Deputy Minister of Health Prof. Tran Van Thuan expressed gratitude to WHO. “These medical supplies and consumables from WHO have arrived at the critical time as the Government and Vietnamese people are making effort to control and prevent the spread of Covid-19.

They will be delivered immediately to Ho Chi Minh City as Covid-19 emergency response for southern provinces. Vietnam also expects WHO’s continuous technical support, especially in research and development of treatments and vaccines,” he said.

Vietnam considers granting registration certificate for conditional circulation to Nano Covax

The National Committee for Ethics in Biomedical Research under the Ministry of Health (MoH) has agreed that the mid-term results from Nano Covax's phase 3 clinical trials will be submitted to the Advisory Council for the Registration of Circulation of Drugs and Medicinal Ingredients for considering the issuance of a registration certificate for the conditional circulation of the vaccine.

In its statement issued on August 28, the National Committee for Ethics in Biomedical Research affirmed that the homegrown vaccine meets safety requirements. The statement also mentioned the committee’s conclusion at its urgent meeting on August 22 to evaluate the mid-term result of Nano Covax's phase 3 clinical trials until August 18, stressing that the vaccine has immunogenicity on the tried cases.

The committee also requested additional results of the plaque reduction neutralization test (PRNT) of Coronavirus on Delta and Alpha variants to meet enough test results in accordance with the approved plan.

Prime Minister requests Covid vaccination for children

Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh on Saturday requested ministries vaccinate children so the new school year could begin safely. Chinh made the request to the Ministry of Health and Ministry of Education and Training, adding the government would deploy policies to ensure the new school year could begin safely thanks to vaccination.

The health ministry would need to determine which type of Covid-19 vaccine is frequently used by other countries to vaccinate children aged 12 and above. For younger, if an appropriate vaccine is available, the ministry would need to gain access to that too.

The education ministry meanwhile should collaborate with the health ministry to aid with vaccination. Teachers should also be vaccinated in preparation for the new school year, he added. Schools in low-risk areas can resume on-site schooling along with coronavirus restrictions, while schools in high-risk areas would continue with online classes, he said. Vaccinating students against Covid-19 has also been proposed by localities and the education ministry itself.

The nation has so far registered a total of 2,579 imported and 419,890 domestic infections throughout the pandemic, while the number of recoveries increased to close to 211,000 after 12,375 patients were discharged from hospital after going on to make a full recovery from the virus.
