Harris reportedly will be in Vietnam between August 24 and 26 for an official visit upon the invitation of her counterpart Vo Thi Anh Xuan, following a visit to Singapore.

This is the first trip to Vietnam by a U.S. vice president. Her visit, the first to the country by a U.S. vice president, is part of a trip to Southeast Asia.

What is Harris' working schedule in Vietnam?

According to a statement of the White House, during her stay, Harris will engage Vietnamese leaders, including a meeting with Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh, on issues of mutual interest, including regional security, the global response to the COVID-19 pandemic, climate change, and joint efforts to promote a rules-based international order.

She is expected to meet representatives of social organizations on environmental protection, women's empowerment, the rights of people with disabilities and the LGBTQ community.

The US Vice President will also affirm and celebrate the strong cultural and people-to-people ties between the US and Vietnam.

On August 25, Harris will be welcomed by Vietnam Vice President Vo Thi Anh Xuan.

She also plans to attend the inauguration of an office of the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in Hanoi on Wednesday, which will work to deal with issues related to infectious diseases in Southeast Asia.

The office will strengthen CDC's ability to protect the health of American citizens and people of the region, through rapid response to health threats and building key relationships to address priorities for health. US Secretary of Health and Human Services Xavier Becerra, US CDC Director Rochelle Walensky, and health officials from many countries in the region also attended the event.

After concluding the visit on August 26, the US Vice President will chair a press conference on the results of the visit, and the future of the US-Vietnam Comprehensive Partnership.

The three-day visit is hoped to contribute to strengthening ties and expanding economic cooperation between the US and important partners in the Indo-Pacific region, VNA reported.

The official visit came as the two countries have seen increasing cooperation in different fields, including maritime security and Covid-19 pandemic control.

The US is currently the largest COVID-19 vaccine donor for Vietnam with 5 million doses of Moderna vaccine. As of August 3, 2021, Vietnam ranked 7th among the top 10 countries receiving the vaccine support from the country.

Vietnam has also signed commercial agreements with US vaccine manufacturers Moderna and Pfizer to realise its goal of having about 70 percent of its population provided with the first shot by the first quarter of 2022.

In his visit to Vietnam last month, US Secretary of Defence Lloyd Austin said his country pledged to donate 77 cold storage freezers to help Vietnam store COVID-19 vaccines.

In 2020, despite the pandemic, bilateral trade grew by 19.8 percent to $90.8 billion, VNE reported.
