HCMC - Vietnam and the United States have reached an agreement on the technology transfer for the Covid-19 vaccines, Minister of Health Nguyen Thanh Long said at a meeting on July 25.

According to Long, this will be the most advanced technology, and the trial for the technology transfer will take place in August.

“A Covid-19 vaccine production facility capable of producing more than 100 million doses is under construction and would be operational in the first half of 2022,” the Health Minister said.

Vietnam has also reached agreements on technology transfers for the Covid-19 vaccines with Russia and Japan.

The first phase of the technology transfer agreement with Russia has been complete, with Vietnam’s Vabiotech Company packaging its first batch of the Sputnik V Covid-19 vaccine last week. The batch will be evaluated in Russia before mass production begins in Vietnam.

The technology transfer for the Russian Covid-19 vaccine is expected to finish by the end of this year, Long said.

Vietnam has secured deals for 130 million doses of the Covid-19 vaccines from the United States, Japan, Australia, the UK and China. The country is also in talks for a further 40 million doses, which are expected to arrive in 2021 and early 2022.

In July 2021 alone, more than 12 million doses of the Covid-19 vaccines will be distributed to localities hit by the pandemic. They will be given to prioritized people in accordance with the Government’s Resolution No. 21.

Long said the Government is trying its best to get the Covid-19 vaccines in the context of the global vaccine scarcity. Some of the biggest vaccine manufacturers in the world such as India have decided to stop exporting Covid-19 vaccines as they are hit hard by the pandemic.

Up to now, 4.5 million Covid-19 vaccine doses have been administered in Vietnam. However, only some 372,000 people have received two doses.
