HCMC - The Ministry of Health has confirmed 73 new locally transmitted Covid-19 cases, mainly in the hotspots of Bac Giang and Bac Ninh, sending the country’s Covid-19 tally to 5,086 as of this evening, May 22.
With 39 new patients, Bac Giang remains the biggest hotspot in the fourth Covid-19 wave with 851 cases to date. Bac Ninh came second with 419 cases, including 25 new cases confirmed this evening.
Lang Son, Dien Bien and Thanh Hoa reported two new cases each, while Danang, Hai Duong and Thai Nguyen had one case each.
This brought today’s tally to 145, including two imported cases.
The country has reported 2,035 domestic infections in the fourth Covid-19 wave since April 27. Four provinces, including Yen Bai, Quang Ngai, Dong Nai and Nghe An, have spent 14 days without new cases.
More than 179,000 people who had close contact with Covid-19 patients or returned from pandemic-hit countries are being quarantined. Up to now, 2,721 Covid-19 patients in the country have made a full recovery, including 32 people discharged from hospital today.
Addressing a meeting of the national steering committee for Covid-19 infection prevention and control on May 21, Deputy Prime Minister Vu Duc Dam asked Bac Giang and Bac Ninh provinces to allow businesses that meet hygiene and safety requirements to resume operation.
The two northern provinces have become the country’s Covid-19 hotspots with hundreds of Covid-19 cases reported in industrial zones. The local authorities have had to temporarily shut down some industrial zones to curb the spread of the pandemic.
However, the closure of industrial zones may cause disruptions in production and the supply chain. Therefore, enterprises meeting safety requirements should be allowed to reopen.
According to the deputy prime minister, enterprises eligible for the resumption of operation must perform quick Covid-19 tests on their workers on a daily basis, disinfect their cargo vehicles everyday and tighten control over all employees during and after working time. Besides, the workers must keep a safe physical distance from each other.
