Hanoi police impose $129,700 fines on maskless people since beginning of May

Police in Hanoi have levied fines totaling more than VND3 billion (US$129,700) upon people who failed to wear face masks in public since the beginning of this month.

About 200 people in the capital were booked for failure to wear face masks in public every day from May 1 to 12, according to the municipal Department of Public Security.

The fines averaged out at over VND300 million ($12,900) per day.

According to current regulations, failure to wear face masks in public is punishable by a VND1-3 million ($43-129) fine.

Aside from making sure all residents comply with the face mask mandate, police officers also carried out regular inspections at local discos, game centers, karaoke parlors, and sidewalk eateries as authorities have required these venues to cease operations due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Vietnam has documented 3,679 COVID-19 cases as of Thursday afternoon, with 2,636 recoveries and 35 deaths, according to the Ministry of Health.

The country has recorded 664 local infections since April 27, including 169 cases in Hanoi.

Authorities in the capital have decided to shutter all karaoke parlors, bars, discos and game centers from April 30 and movie theaters, massage parlors, spa services, and gym centers from May 5.

All students were required to stay home and switch to remote learning on May 4.

Beer restaurants and drinking venues were shut down from Tuesday.
