Vietnam reports highest-ever 24-hour surge in local coronavirus infections

Vietnam confirmed the largest number of local COVID-19 infections in 24 hours on Monday morning, taking the national tally past 3,400 cases.

A total of 170 domestically-transmitted cases were confirmed from 6:00 am on Sunday to 6:00 am on Monday, according to the Ministry of Health’s data.

The country has registered 411 domestic cases in 26 provinces and cities since April 27, after it had gone about a month detecting zero infections in the community.

Hanoi is leading the table with 120 cases, followed by Bac Ninh Province with 85, Vinh Phuc Province with 52, Da Nang with 48, and Bac Giang Province with 37.

Vietnam announced 92 local cases on Sunday alone, the steepest daily rise of domestic infections.

The old record was set up on January 28, when 84 local cases were confirmed by the health ministry.

Vietnam has documented 3,412 COVID-19 cases as of Monday morning, with 2,602 recoveries and 35 deaths, according to the ministry’s statistics.

The Southeast Asian country has administered 851,513 out of its stock of 917,600 AstraZeneca vaccine doses, the health ministry said in a report on Monday.

Those vaccinated were medical staff and other frontline workers.

A medical worker died on Friday of anaphylaxis, a severe, life-threatening allergic reaction that occurs rarely post-vaccination, after being injected with an AstraZeneca dose one day earlier, the Ministry of Health announced the same day.

Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh on Sunday warned of failure in COVID-19 prevention and control amid a very high risk of the disease spreading nationwide.

“This situation is very complicated,” PM Chinh said during a national teleconference.

“There is a very high probability of the epidemic sweeping the entire country, which can happen whenever we don’t have a proper response.

“We will fail if we don’t have the people battle the virus with us.”
