HCMC - Vietnam tonight, May 9, reported 87 new Covid-19 cases, both imported and locally transmitted, taking the day's total number of infections to 102, which is the record number of new cases in a single day.

The new cases tonight included 77 locally transmitted cases detected in nine cities and provinces and 10 imported cases, taking the country’s Covid-19 tally to 3,332.

Among the imported cases, five were reported in Vinh Long Province and two in Tien Giang Province, while Ha Tinh, Hanoi and Quang Tri had one new case each.

The new domestic infections were mostly detected in northern localities including Bac Giang, Bac Ninh, Hanoi, Hung Yen and Hoa Binh.

Bac Giang recorded the largest number with 26 new cases, followed by Bac Ninh with 15 cases and Hanoi with 11 cases. Hung Yen and Hoa Binh Province had two cases each.

The pandemic also spread quickly in the central region. The Ministry of Health confirmed 17 new cases in Danang, two in Hue, one in Quang Nam and one in Quang Tri.

This morning, the health ministry reported 15 cases, all locally-transmitted.

The country has reported 333 new Covid-19 cases in the latest outbreak since April 27.

“The Covid-19 situation is very complicated now. The pandemic might spread nationwide at any time if we don’t have proper solutions. Without the unity of all the people, we might lose in this fight,” said Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh.

According to the Ministry of Health, many of the recent patients were infected with the B.1.617 variant of Covid-19 from India following genetic sequencing of the patients' samples by the National Institute of Hygiene and Epidemiology.

The B.1.617 variant, also known as the double mutation strain, is said to be more transmissible than other variants and can reduce the effectiveness of Covid-19 vaccines.

Vietnam had earlier recorded other Covid-19 variants from the United Kingdom and South Africa.
