Food factory in Hanoi caught injecting prawns with filler before shipping

Market monitors in Hanoi have busted a food processing facility for injecting unspecified chemicals into their prawns before shipping them to various restaurants in the capital city.

The facility is located in Yen So Ward of Hoang Mai District, according to Nguyen Binh Minh, an inspection officer working for the Hanoi Department of Agriculture and Rural Development.

Minh orchestrated the raid alongside local economic police officers on Wednesday.

“During the inspection, workers at the facility claimed that the filler was injected into the prawns at customers' request, but it was actually done of the facility owner’s own accord,” Minh explained.

Authorities estimate that each prawn weighed about 10-15 percent heavier after the injection, vastly increasing the factory’s profits.

“Functional forces have collected samples in an attempt to pinpoint the chemicals used as the filler,” Minh stated.

“We will also point out the restaurants and firms that used prawns from this processing facility.”
