This came following the phone talks with partners to continue carrying out activities regarding the ASEAN Chairmanship Year 2020 and the non-permanent membership of the United Nations Security Council in the 2020-2021 term hosted by the Vietnam Defence Ministry.
Prior to the talks, Vinh gave a reception to Daniel J. Kritenbrink, US Ambassador to Vietnam, who also participated in the event.
During the talks, the two sides informed each other about the coronavirus fight as well as difficulties confronting them, and consented to continue bolstering their cooperation in this field.
Vinh briefed the US side on the activities in military – defence cooperation between ASEAN member states and partner countries in which the US is one of the members, as well as on the ministerial-level meetings and other meetings hosted by Vietnam.
The US side spoke highly of the adjustment of the agenda by Vietnam for the ASEAN Chairmanship year and voice its support for the activities of the regional bloc in general and Vietnam’s initiatives in particular.
Regarding bilateral ties, both sides reviewed the outcomes of their cooperation over the recent past, especially in dealing with the war consequences. They agreed to step up cooperation areas in line with the common relationship, with priority given to the solution of the war consequences and the United Nations peacekeeping missions.
They also compared notes on regional and global issues of shared concern and reached a consensus that adherence to international law in settling disputes is an important measure that contributes to the trust building, peace, stability and common development of the region and the world.
