Multiple shootings reported in Vienna, Austria

Police are searching for at least one attacker who is still at large. Austrian Chancellor Sebastian Kurz called it a “repulsive terror attack” and said Austria is experiencing difficult hours. He said the police will act decisively against the perpetrators of this hideous terrorist attack and Austria will never allow itself to be intimidated by terrorism.


Leaders across the region were quick to condemn the shootings. French President Emmanuel Macron said Europe must not “give up” in the face of attacks, adding that the French people share the shock and grief of the Austrian people. Italian Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte and EU Council chief Charles Michel also strongly condemned the attacks, saying there is no room for hatred and violence in Europe.


Charles Michel, the president of the European Council called the attack an act that violates life and human values. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, European Parliament President David Sassoli, and Josep Borrell Fontelles, the High Representative of the EU for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy also condemned the attack.
