Launch of a fundraising movement to support disaster victims at the Center
The General Department for the Prevention and Control of Natural Disasters under the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development coordinated with members of the Partnership for Disaster Risk Reduction to organize a mobilization movement on October 19. funds to support victims suffering from the consequences of torrential rains and floods that have occurred in recent days in the Center.
During the launching ceremony, the Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development, Nguyen Hoang Hiep, stressed that the Central Steering Committee for the Prevention and Control of Natural Disasters had suggested to ministries, central agencies, local authorities, social organizations, national and foreign donors to join forces to help disaster victims overcome their difficulties.
Andrew Jeffries, Country Director of the Asian Development Bank (AfDB), said that from October 20 to 23 there will be three delegations under the Partnership for Disaster Risk Reduction that will study and assess damage in central provinces of Quang Binh, Quang Tri, Thua Thien-Hue, Quang Nam, Quang Ngai. On this basis, specific support will be granted, he said.
At the meeting, partners for disaster risk reduction pledged to participate in disaster surveys and will provide aid and relief to people in the Central region. Currently, the Standing Office of the Central Steering Committee for Natural Disaster Prevention and Control has received a pledge of support from the ASEAN Coordination Center for Humanitarian Assistance (AHA), Embassy of Japan in Vietnam, the United States Embassy /USAID, and the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) in Vietnam.
In recent days, torrential rains have had serious consequences in some central provinces, including Thua Thien-Hue, Quang Tri, Quang Binh and Ha Tinh. The balance sheet established at 06:00 on October 19 is 90 dead, 34 missing, according to the National Steering Committee for the Prevention and Fight against Natural Disasters
In particular, in the commune of Phong Xuan, district of Phong Dien, province of Thua Thien-Hue, landslides buried 17 workers at the Rao Trang 3 hydropower plant and 13 officers and soldiers who were part of a team of rescue composed of 21 members set up on October 12 to rescue them. On October 18 twenty-two soldiers and military officials went missing after a landslide engulfed their base in a mountainous region of Quang Tri province.
In addition, 121694 houses were flooded, 924 ha of paddy fields, 106616 of food crops, 531756 domestic animals and poultry were drowned and 17409 m of roads became impassable.
