Three small children at a primary school in Lao Cai Province were killed and three others injured after a school gate fell onto them.

The tragic accident occurred at around 1.30 pm on September 7 at Khanh Yen Thuong Primary School of Khanh Yen Thuong Commune, Van Ban District in the northern mountainous province.
Chairman of Khanh Yen Thuong Commune People’s Committee, Nguyen Van Hanh told Dantri/DTiNews Newspaper that the victims included two first-grade students and a kindergarten child aged 4 who are all studying at the facility.
“We were told that the students were climbing on the gate when it suddenly fell on to them,” Hanh said. “Three died on the spot and three others were injured.”
Doctors at Van Ban District General Hospital said that at 2.30 pm they admitted three children aged between 4-6 who had injuries in the heads and chins.
“We’ve carried out necessary check-ups and found the injuries are not serious. The children are now in a stable condition,” the doctors said.
Head of Van Ban District’s Department of Education and Training, Nguyen Manh Thang, said that this was the first day of the new school year and the classes here were due to start at 2 pm.
The steel gate is about two metres high and placed on a slope. It rained from the evening of September 6 to the noon of September 7 in the area.
Police are further investigating the cause of the accident.
