Vietnam’s Nui Chua receives world biosphere reserve certificate from UNESCO

A ceremony was organized on Thursday in Ninh Thuan Province, south-central Vietnam to mark the recognition of Nui Chua as a world biosphere reserve by the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO).

At the ceremony, representatives from UNESCO and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs presented Le Huyen, deputy chairman of the Ninh Thuan People's Committee, with a certificate recognizing Nui Chua as a world biosphere reserve.

UNESCO designated the Nui Chua complex as a world biosphere reserve in September 2021.

The Nui Chua Biosphere Reserve is part of the Nui Chua National Park in the province.

It covers over 106,646 hectares in area and comprises three distinct ecosystems: forests, seas, and semi-deserts.

It is the only standard model of Vietnam's and Southeast Asia's dry forest ecosystem.

According to Tran Van Tiep, director of Nui Chua National Park, the Nui Chua world biosphere reserve is home to over 1,511 plant species, 54 of which are listed in both the Vietnam Red Data Book and the IUCN Red List, and 765 animal species, 46 of which are included in both the Vietnam Red Data Book and the IUCN Red List.

Nui Chua, in particular, is a rare habitat for a variety of endangered species, including sea turtles, black-shanked doucs, and Vietnam mouse-deer, all of which are currently being preserved and protected strictly.

Vinh Hy Bay, one of Vietnam's eight most picturesque bays, is also located within the Nui Chua world biosphere reserve.

The bay was designated as a national relic site in January 2020.

Ninh Thuan Province's Department of Culture, Sports, and Tourism also received a certificate recognizing Vinh Hy Bay as a national monument of scenic beauty.

Deputy chairman Huyen stated during the ceremony that the Nui Chua world biosphere reserve and Vinh Hy Bay scenic spot will help promote the image of nature, people, and indigenous culture in Ninh Thuan Province in particular, and of Vietnam in general, to international visitors.
