HCMC – The Embassy of the Netherlands in Vietnam is organizing the World Press Photo exhibition in Hanoi, with this year’s event presenting a selection of the most important stories over the last three years from the World Press Photo contest, focusing on topics such as migration and environmental protection.
After two successful exhibitions in 2018 and 2019, this year’s theme is “Best of Three 2018-2020”.
The annual World Press Photo contest awards photographers from all over the world for their significant images, which represent the past year of photojournalism. It is the world’s leading contest for professional press photographers, photojournalists and documentary photographers. In the last three years, the contest received some 75,000 entries each year from at least 125 countries.
“It is a well-known saying that an image says more than 1,000 words. The pictures in this exhibition are prime examples of telling their story across cultural and language barriers,” said Ambassador of the Netherlands to Vietnam Elsbeth Akkerman.
“Each picture exhibited here tells the story of ordinary people in extraordinary circumstances and the story about how we as people relate to the planet we live on. The pictures are a celebration and acknowledgement of the importance of photography, photojournalism and diversity, allowing people to tell the story they need to, thus enabling us to hear the things we need to hear,” Akkerman stressed.
There are also a number of side events such as workshops, panel discussions, portfolio reviews, projection nights, artist talks and guided tours for all the people interested in learning more about the stories behind the pictures.
The World Press Photo exhibition – Best of Three 2018-2020 will run until November 29 at the Hoan Kiem Lake walking area. It is a part of the Vietnam Festival of Creativity & Design 2020, organized by RMIT University Vietnam in collaboration with the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization, the Vietnam National Institute of Culture and Arts Studies, COLAB Vietnam and other partners in the creative industries.
