HCMC – Dalat, the capital city of Lam Dong Province, is planning to reduce its greenhouse acreage and get rid of all the greenhouses in the city center over a span of eight years, according to the Lam Dong People’s Committee.
Vice Chairman of the Lam Dong People Committee Pham S asked the Department of Agricultural and Rural Development to set a clear target to shift from greenhouse farming to ecological farming and circular agriculture to adapt to climate change.
Dalat has been assigned to reduce some 20% of its greenhouse area by 2025 and 80% by 2030.
Dalat and other districts will be in charge of reviewing the greenhouses built in contravention of the applicable law and drawing up plans to dismantle and relocate them.
The Dalat authority will develop a roadmap to gradually reduce the greenhouse area based on the assessment of greenhouse farming in each ward and aim to zero out the number of greenhouses in the inner-city areas by 2030.
Currently, greenhouse farming in the province has yet to be properly developed and fully regulated by the authority. The ratio of greenhouse area to the total land, especially in the city center, has not been prescribed in any regulations, according to the Department of Agricultural and Rural Development.
Many greenhouses have yet to be equipped with adequate drainage systems and irrigation canals, causing flooding and soil erosion in low-lying areas in the city and the surroundings recently.
The ratios of greenhouse areas in some inner-city wards remain high, for example, 83.7% in wards 12 and over 60% in wards 5,7 and 8. The excessive number of greenhouses can severely affect the area’s environment, landscape and tourism development.
