HCMC – The Hanoi government on January 7 sent an urgent dispatch asking the competent agencies and districts to quickly adopt effective measures to improve the poor air quality in the city.

To enhance the quality of air, the municipal government asked the Hanoi Department of Natural Resources and Environment to work with the relevant departments, agencies and districts to encourage residents to refrain from burning straw and reusing honeycomb charcoal stoves.

It is necessary to map out short-, medium- and long-term plans on environmental protection as well as build detailed scenarios to address air pollution, according to the municipal government.

The municipal Department of Natural Resources and Environment was also told to collaborate with the Vietnam Environment Administration to check the operation of air quality monitoring stations in the city and publicize the air quality index.

In addition, the municipal government asked the city police to cooperate with some competent agencies to review cars producing smoke and aging motor vehicles that affect the quality of air and handle these cases.

The Hanoi government also told districts to plant trees and forests and regenerate natural forests, contributing to improving the air quality.

Between January 1 and 5, a wide gap between nighttime and daytime temperatures formed a thick smog at dawn and dusk, contributing to air pollution in the city.

Besides, the city is also surrounded by developing industrial zones in some neighboring provinces, worsening the quality of air.

Other factors polluting the air included waste burial, straw burning and construction activities, Tuoi Tre Online reported.

Unfavorable weather is predicted to worsen the quality of the air in Hanoi City from now until March.
