NDO – The first turbine of the Song Hau 1 Thermal Power Plant in Chau Thanh District, Hau Giang Province was successfully synchronised with the national 500kV grid for the first time on November 26.
According to Le Manh Hung, General Director of the Vietnam National Oil and Gas Group (PVN) – the main investor in the project, the successful synchronisation of Turbine 1 is the next important milestone after nearly four months of debut combustion (July 28, 2020), towards completing a trial run and putting the turbine into commercial operation in Q2 2021.
This is also a step forward in the process of building and installing Turbine 1, testing its system and generating electricity to the national grid, marking a milestone in moving on to the process of conducting trial runs and adjusting combustion modes to increase capacity and optimise system operations, he said.
Permanent Vice Chairman of the Provincial People’s Committee Truong Canh Tuyen proposed that PVN and relevant units continue with the next steps to complete the trial runs and begin the commercial operation of Turbine 1 in Q2 2021, as well as commencing trial run on the second turbine in the following quarter.
The Song Hau 1 Thermal Power Plant project is part of the general planning of Song Hau Power Centre approved by the Ministry of Industry and Trade in its Decision No. 6722/QD-BCT dated December 23, 2008, and the planning of connecting power centres to the national power system in Decision No. 6949/QD-BCT dated December 30, 2010. The plant is composed of two units with a total capacity of 1,200 MW (2x600MW), with PVN as the investor and LILAMA as the EPC contractor. Total funding for the project is more than VND43 trillion (US$2 billion), including 30% owner’s equity and 70% loans.
The project is of significance in the implementation of the Vietnamese oil and gas industry’s power development strategy until 2030. When put into operation, the plant will supply about 7.8 billion kWh of electricity a year to the national grid, contributing to ensuring national energy security and economic development in the Mekong Delta and Hau Giang Province.
